Portugal. The Man
Portugal. The Man became famous for their original combination of rock, psychedelia, pop, and electronica. Their music is characterized by catchy melodies, layered sound, and lyrics that often carry social or political undertones. In 2017, they reached a whole new level with their album Woodstock, which earned a platinum record from the RIAA. The biggest contributor to this was their catchy hit “Feel It Still,” which earned the band a GRAMMY Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, seven-time platinum certification, a record 20 weeks at number one on alternative radio, and strong representation on the Top 40 charts.
Behind their musical successes lies their long-standing interest in social justice. It is the combination of music and activism that comes most naturally to Portugal. The Man. In 2020, they founded the Pass The Mic Foundation, which focuses on human rights, community health, and environmental protection, with a strong emphasis on supporting indigenous peoples. Among the organizations supported by the foundation are Alaska Native Health, which provides top-quality healthcare to indigenous communities in Alaska, and Seeding Sovereignty, which addresses issues of land, food, and sovereignty for indigenous peoples.
