Tea: Podhoubí talks – Between enthusiasm and burnout

III-rd space café
People working in artistic and supporting professions often find themselves on the verge of burnout. What is the status of an artist, and why is it insufficient? Why and how can we support culture and the people who create it? Discussion with Hana Řičicová in ARCHA+.

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a number of debates about working conditions in the arts. One of the main topics has been the preparation of the Status of the Artist – there have been extensive discussions and research into its form, but the results have had only a minimal impact on the adopted version. In the meantime, other factors have emerged that are affecting the situation, such as a sharp rise in inflation, which has made conditions in the performing arts even more difficult.

On the other hand, positive trends have also strengthened. The taboos that previously prevented people from speaking openly about problems have weakened – for example, there is now open discussion about fees and inequalities (such as the differences between the fees paid to female and male directors).

The discussion will focus on how to deal with these issues now that they are part of the public discourse and how to move the debate forward. Have real changes for the better been set in motion? Or is it necessary to look for other ways forward?

The following guests have accepted the invitation:

Jana Návratová – expert on the status of artists (dance critic, chair of the board of trustees of the Dance Career Foundation)
Johana Bártová – independent theater artist (set designer for object theater and dramaturge, FRAS and other projects)
Mark Kristián Hochman – actor working in independent theater (Lachende Bestien) and established theater (Činoherní studio Ústí nad Labem).

The Third Space program brings all areas of ARCHA+ to life, except for the Large Hall. The name itself is based on the sociological concept of third places, which describes spaces between home, school, or work where people meet and spend their free time. More information can be found here.
