Swans + Jessica Moss

The Swans colossus is about to undergo another transformation. The legendary band will present the new album Birthing in Prague, which will be the last recording capturing their characteristic massive sound. Canadian composer and violinist Jessica Moss will open the evening.

The iconic band, led by charismatic frontman Michael Gira, has been a seminal name in guitar alternative that has influenced entire genres for over four decades and has never stood still. Artistically and critically acclaimed, the hugely successful reunion has carried the band's pursuit of maximum intensity and its reworking towards finding a softer, more layered position. The foundation, however, has always been the powerful sound of Giro's ever-changing ensemble and the almost alchemical process of initially acoustic compositions morphing over the course of long tours into monumental epics that straddle post-rock, Americana and non-genre hypnotic repetition.

According to Gira, this year's album Birthing will be the last to be made in this way. Swans are to continue to operate in the stripped down, more lyrical vein that the new record already references, and the current tour is to be the last as a full band. In the end, though, judging from the first released track I Am a Tower and the Live Rope concert footage - the new stuff will still blow you away with the power of the sound, and it's impossible to forget why Swans shows are so often referred to as transcendental experiences. Although the dark undertones are still present and the lyrics go for the flesh, Swans sound downright euphoric this time around, much like some moments on classic 90s records. Much of Giro's work is confrontational to the point of (self-)destruction. In recent years, however, he has found more and more joy in honest reflection on old age. Birthing is meant to be an inspiring accompaniment to dreaming; it should be noted, however, that it will not be easy to wake up from such dreams.

Swans in 2025: Dana Schechter, Phil Puleo, Kristof Hahn, Norman Westberg, Christopher Pravdica, Larry Mullins, Michael Gira.

Opening the evening will be composer and violinist Jessica Moss, who has been on the international experimental music scene since 2001, originally as a member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion, and since the group's hiatus as a solo artist on the Canadian label Constellation.

Large auditorium, free standing.
