The film explores the changing dynamics of public space in big cities and shows how art can inspire people to re-appropriate and re-shape their surroundings. Through art events and performative lectures, "Public Works" illustrates ways to "take back the city."
The artistic interventions are vividly interwoven throughout the film under the directorial baton of Vladimir Turner, who has himself been making art in public space for nearly two decades. The title of the film, Public Works, refers to the fact that every action in the film shows the avant-garde potential of art. One that is not a decoration, but a radical intervention and a driving force fighting against a conservative technocratic perception of the world.
